Livorno

Livorno's history dates back to the 11th century but the city was established as the port of Florence and built as an ideal city by the Medici in the 1500s.

Today it is one of Italy's most important ports and Tuscany's second largest city.

The Livornesi people are friendly, curious, funny and just a bit loud. They will always try to help you even if you don't share a language. Although many of them speak English.

The local food scene focuses, like everything else in Livorno, around the sea. You will be served excellent fish and seafood dishes. Be sure to try crayfish, calamari or maybe cacciucco, the famous local fish soup, in a restaurant overlooking the marina in the sunset.

Getting around

If something by chance isn't within walking distance from the flat, a bus that goes there is. The apartment is 5 minutes walk from Piazza Grande which is the main bus square. There you will also find the tourist information.

The central station is ten minutes by bus LAM Blu and from there trains will take you on daytrips to Tuscan gems like Pisa (15 mns), Lucca (50 mns) and Florence (1 h 10 mns).

You'll find a large car park five minutes from the flat. Parking is 30 cents per hour and 45 € per week.

Things to do

If you don't already have a list of things you want to do during your stay, have a look at livornonow.com which is the most comprehensive site in English about Livorno.

We recommend a boat trip on the canals and around the inner harbour. It is a unique and lovely way to see the city. The tourist information will give you the details.

Visit the Mercato Centrale, the largest market hall in Tuscany, for a food shopping experience out of the ordinary.

And whatever you do, don't leave Livorno without having seen at least one magical sunset at the Terrazza Mascagni!
